So far behind on layouts!!

Holy cow! I don't know where the time has gone this month, but it hasn't been spent on scrapbooking! I feel like I'm chasing my tail and with summer and mowing coming, it's only going to get busier! Last night, I finally got a couple of layouts done for Vicky.

Here are a few snapshots from my yard. My poor flower beds have been so neglected, but I still have some things that don't require my help, thank goodness. lol

The day after Easter, we picked up our 3 new kittens from my friend, Annetta. Needless to say, they are ornery and into everything. I can't believe how much they want to play in the middle of the night! It's almost as much work as a real baby sometimes! lol

My kitten, Novio, loves to get right up on my chest at night when I sleep in the recliner. He plops himself right up on my heart and sprawls out and starts purring. What a baby! lol

Midnight is the shyest, but she can be a handful when she wants to play and she bites hard! She is Seth's kitten.

Cialo is Selena's baby and she loves to get into everything and thinks she can be on my table the most. She and my squirt bottle are getting to know each other. She cracks me up when I catch her and all I have to do is pick up the bottle. She jumps down and then will poke her head up until I get near her again and down she goes! It's like watching a game of Whack a Mole when she goes up and down! haha

I don't much like having my pic taken anymore, but Selena (my daughter) talked me into it right before I went to work the other day. I'm glad she did. I'm happy with the way it turned out. :)

On this page I used some pics that Selena took out in our backyard of the sky in February. I loved the angles and clarity but also that she turned around and took shots of her feet. That's what gave me the title for the page. Fun stuff, Selena. I like your perspective, honey!

In February, a new baby was welcomed into the family. I now have a great-nephew who is the 4th boy to carry the name that was first given to my father, Jim Sr. I have a feeling that Daddy (Great Grandpa Jim) is smiling from heaven. I know the rest of us are so happy for Jimmy, Sonia, and Olivia. Congrats on your growing family. I love you guys!

I sense them - those pesky life lessons. The ones in living, dying, loving and surviving.
This last year, I’ve spent grieving and thinking about the loss of my father. Was knowing ahead of time more or less painful than losing someone in an accident suddenly? Was I able to make the most of it to the best of my abilities? I hope he thought so. Being the person I am, of course, I question it. Really, who wouldn’t? The shoulda, woulda, coulda can sure drive a person nuts if you let it. As I give it thought, I try to find the lessons in it all.
What is it that scares me about death? I mean, really, when you think about it, once I’m dead, I won’t know the difference anymore. That sounds logical. I’ve come to think that a lot of the fear is from me knowing that someone else will (hopefully) miss me because they loved me so much.
Recently, I learned that someone dear to me has incurable cancer. My heart just sank hearing that nasty word. I cried for her, and I cried for myself and the family and friends who will miss her when her time comes.
I’ve always known that others in her family have not fully appreciated all the unselfish things that she’s done over the years to help them at the drop of a hat. Why is it so hard to say thank you, I love you, or may I do something in return to help? I was telling her I loved her even when I knew she had a hard time hearing it. That’s just who I am.
I now have a chance to help her with this last journey in her life. I intend to do what I can to help when she needs it. I can’t ease her pain, but I can run to the store for her, maybe drop off something already cooked, or fold laundry. It doesn’t matter what it is. It’s the least I can do for all of the help, love, and acceptance she has given me over the years.
There is another easy lesson in all of this. We don’t have to wait for a disease or something horrible to happen before we can be helpful or loving towards others. We have that opportunity every day to make a difference, even if it’s just small. No, you don’t have to smile 24 hours a day or knock yourself out constantly doing for others and neglecting yourself. Just take the time to hold that door for the next person, let those with only a handful of items in front of you at the checkout, or maybe just let that driver out into traffic. It’s sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Really, it is and it’s amazing how good it feels to you knowing that you did something kind.
Try it. You’ll be surprised. Who knows? Maybe you’ll learn another life lesson along the way, as well.

Snowy Days layouts

We finally got our first winter snow last week here in Wichita. It wasn't a lot, but it was pretty. Seth decided to make a mini snowman that welcomed me home after work one night. Check out whose noses were in the window when I pulled into the drive on a different night. Goofy kids! haha

I love birdhouses and these 2 hang in one of my maple trees out by the street. I got a couple of shots before the snow started to melt. Too bad we aren't back in the country so I could get even more fun shots. :)

My Christmas was a little late this year. Many years ago after divorcing the first time, I just found it less stressful for my kids to wait until everyone else was done with them to have our Christmas together. This year was no exception.

Jhesi and Jason showed up early, so I put them to work with the canned goods and celery. Once Josh and Paisley showed up, we were ready to get the turkey carved and while Josh worked on that, I think they were all sneaking little bites. Of course, they probably thought I didn't know, but we moms have eyes in the back of our heads, you know. haha Paisley got the job of taking some photos and herding the 2- 2 year olds and keeping them out of harm's way. I think Selena and Seth just watched. lol

I'm not done scrapping the pictures that I want to use, but this is the first page from the cooking time. I need more practice with how long to cook my mom's dressing, but overall, I think it tasted pretty good. Okay, I did miss the salt. lol

Pick a word (or a few)

As 2010 comes to an end, thankfully, I’ve been thinking about words that come to mind to describe my life, thoughts, and feelings. As I go about my day, I find myself “writing” in my head. The only problem is that by the time I can get to some paper or the computer, the ideas become tangled or lost. Even so, I just can’t shake this need to express myself with words. Here are just a small few.
Scary-
January 2010 brought with it the possibility of no longer having my unemployment to pay my bills. I scrambled to find all legal means to keep my bills paid and not get behind.
The months dragged on as I continued to search for work that I could handle, be qualified for, and that would let me still get my last 2 kids to school. I was so relieved when I finally found a perfect spot for me in late September. Somehow, I never got behind and it wasn’t easy, but I’m glad to say that this particular chapter is over. Hopefully, I will continue to thrive where I am now.
Heartbreaking-
March came in like a lion, but did not go out like a lamb. The lion was a horrible disease that took my father away from us. We knew it was coming, silently, slowly sneaking up, but there was nowhere to run to hide from it.
I am still struggling to understand it, even now. I’m angry that he never got to enjoy the retirement he worked so hard to reach. I’m sad that because my folks lived so far away, I wasn’t able to be there to help my family with his care or whatever they might have needed. I hate that I can’t be there for my Mom now like I want to be.
My dad was my biggest fan. I miss him every day and I refuse to apologize for the tears. They come when they come. I couldn’t stop them if I tried. I love you, Daddy.
Thankful-
I could list things all day long that fit under this word. My family, my friends, and most of all, my kids come to mind. These are the people who support me, laugh with (at) me, help me, and but most of all, still love me for me. Without them, I wouldn’t have the courage to just be myself. Sometimes, they are the only thing that keeps me going when things become unbearable alone. I can’t say thank you enough for the encouragement and love I’ve found in my conversations with them.
Boundaries-
One last word that has been in my head a lot lately is boundaries. It’s in my nature to trust and believe the best in folks. It’s just how I am. I do have my limits, though. If you don’t cross my personal boundaries, you probably have no idea where they are. However, if pushed too much, I will speak up.
I’m still learning that maybe I need to speak up sooner or louder. I’m not sure which. Why is it that it has to reach a point where I feel guilty about not wanting someone in my personal space? Why do we feel like we have to go along and say yes when the little voice in our head says no?
This year I resolve to post my boundaries quickly and clearly. If that isn’t enough, then I will not let myself feel guilty for saying no and going on my way. If I don’t continue to learn how to respect myself, no one else will, either. Life is just too damn short.
In conclusion, I think I will choose one more word that I want, even need, to describe 2011 for my life. The word is CHANGE. It can be small things, baby steps, or just a few new habits to make my life easier and better, for me, for my kids, for my sanity.
May 2011 be our best year yet. We’ve earned it and we definitely deserve it. Don’t you agree?

John Mellencamp - "Save Some Time To Dream" 12/6 Letterman

From the first time I found one of John's tapes in my brother's stuff and listened, I was hooked. Jack and Diane has been in my head ever since. Throughout the years, I collected many of his albums in one form or another, and my favorite ones in tape and CD. The man has a way with the music. I never tire of listening to Little Pink Houses, Cherry Bomb or The Authority Song over and over.
Even the songs that never made it to the charts catch my attention and speak to me when I play them. I love the passion in his words and voice, the lyrics telling a story or lesson for those willing to really listen. They touched me then and they touch me now. In concert, John sounded just as clear and precise as his records.
If I had to pick one musical artist that I could put with my life story, John Cougar Mellencamp, you are the one. Thank you for the memories and hopefully many more to come.

A Fitting 100th Blog Post

My son, Josh, in his uniform. Even though life threw him a curve and he wasn't in the service for long, I still admire his courage to enlist in the first place. I am also proud of him for putting his family where it belonged, first. I love you.

My thanks to all who give us this freedom and the families who support them along the way.

This is my paternal grandfather. Seeing this reminds me that I need to visit with my aunts and uncles to get more details about his service to his country. He never really visited with me about it and I wish I knew more. Now that my Dad is gone, time is running out.

Let this be a reminder to all of us to continue to ask the questions about where we come from, what those before us did in their lifetimes, and to be proud of who we are. If you don't like making scrapbookpages like I do, you can journal or just make a folder with short stories. Just do something to keep the memories alive. It's worth the time, I promise.

Sending my love to all of my family and friends today. :)

My friend, Cheryl, was busy taking pics of her grandson during a Renaissance Fair and she realized that she saw my granddaughter, Emma, too. Being respectful, she didn't take any shots from the front of Emma or Ophelia, but she did happen to catch one from behind when Emma couldn't contain her curiosity. How cute! Wow!

I am so tired and sore, but very grateful tonight. I have been looking for what seemed like forever for a new job and I finally got a break. I am working at a local thrift store and I can't believe how busy we were today. It made the time go pretty quickly, though. It's going to take my body a bit to get used to all that standing again but it's all good. I should sleep better tonight! lol

Today's layouts are with another fun kit from Today's Scrap. She made a fishing kit and it's a little different than usual. It has some real fishing items that were extracted and also a few camping items and unique papers. I'd say it's versatile! lol

My favorite pumpkin pie recipe

This isn't a new page, but a friend posted about pumpkin pies on her blog and it reminded me of my favorite recipe. I love that it's a little sweet but not bitter like some pies. It's also quick to make and only takes one bowl and the pie plate. Easy works for me! lol BTW, I can't take credit for creating the recipe itself, just the page. ;) Let me know if you try it out and how you liked it.

A friend and her family recently got back from Yellowstone, so I am going to have fun scrapping some of her pics for my CT work. This is the first one I chose. I'm not sure if the sun is coming up or going down in this picture, but I loved the way the shadows fall. Thanks for the loan, Dawn.

When Charlene was still my MIL, I bought and planted these 3 crepe myrtle plants for her. Buying her flowers was a no no because of all the trouble she had with allergies, so now she just gets her flowers outside every year. ;) I can't believe how big they have gotten.

Selena took these pictures where we took our dear friends, Mona and Jess, in July. We took them to see the Keeper of the Plains, which stands where the Little Arkansas and Big Arkansas rivers meet near downtown Wichita.

This photo is my sister-in-law and brother during a recent vacation to Colorado. It was taken at the Royal Gorge.

I'm beginning to get a little jealous of everyone getting to go on vacation! lol At least I get to enjoy some sites via the camera lens. :)

This was a fun experiment. I have been wanting to learn how to do black and white photos with just a splash of color, but haven't gotten around to learning how to do it with my programs. The other day I got an email from Photobucket saying they had added this to their photo editing program. It was so easy!!! And the best part is that it's free to have an account and play with it. I know others found it before me but hey, there is always someone who might want to try it out. lol

These pics are all from Paisley and Josh exploring in the country. I'm not sure if they were on Grouse Creek or one of the rivers, but they found some cool trees to photograph.

Here it is, 1 am in the morning and I should be in bed already, but I got sidetracked. You see, I got caught up in one of those info-mercials. When the ones come on that are selling music, I can't help but leave it on and sing along. I love music!! Well, I love rock and country. haha
When I was a kid growing up, I absolutely did not like country music. It wasn't until the mid 80's that it really got on my radar. I go back and forth on the radio, depending on my mood.
Now, back to that 30 minute sales pitch that got my attention tonight. It was a 158 Classic Country music set from the 50's and 60's. I remember hearing it (the old country music) in our home because it was what my dad liked. I guess I heard those songs enough because I can sing along to them better than I should for someone who didn't really like it back then. lol Or maybe it's really because it was something I know he loved, country music, especially the older artists.
For once I didn't mind listening to the sales pitch. It reminded me of my dad, who looked every bit as good as Elvis in his younger years. I also remember that when he'd whistle while working, he never could carry a tune. haha It didn't matter. I still liked hearing it anyway, because I loved him.
I miss and love you, Daddy.

Okay, so it's one layout and 2 brag book pages to fill in later. lol I don't have any cats right now, but I do miss having them around. I have learned, more than once, that cats and living in town do not always mix well. :( When I make it back to the country, then we'll try again. Indoor kitties just leave too much hair and I hated making them stay indoors most of the time. Animals are meant to be outside where they can do what comes naturally to them. :) lol

Good grief, this year's heat is just plain unbearable, isn't it? Nothing like the feeling of melting within a couple of minutes of stepping outside! lol While it's hot out there, I'll just hang out and scrap in here when I can.

These 2 pages are of our dogs, Jenna and Buster. I've saved both their lives 2 times because the neighbor that had them as puppies was crappy at taking care of them. Long story, but had I not spoken up and taken them a few years ago, she would've let her BF haul them to the pound. I just couldn't bear it after having saved them already before that.

They would probably just lick someone to death if they came in the backyard, but at least I'd hear them bark for a bit first. haha

The kids and I worked on catching up some in the backyard. Seth worked on trying to remove the seats that the dogs so kindly chewed up and left sharp edges on. Selena took the loppers and tackled some of the weeds along the fence line that grow way too fast. Later on, this gorgeous big yellow and black butterfly graced us with his presence. It came and went pretty quickly but I did manage to grab the camera and get one shot before Jenna scared it off. We didn't make much of a dent, but I sure appreciate them helping out. Love you guys!

My first Father's Day without my Dad was an emotional one, for sure. It's been on my mind anyway, so Friday night I scrapped the page below ( Missing you on Father's Day) since I couldn't send him a card or place flowers on his grave (too far away). It made me feel better and I just let the tears flow as I worked on it. No shame here.
Thanks for all the lovely comments on the page where I posted it. Sherry was kind enough to choose it for Layout of the Day at Digitals, too. Thank you. That was so nice to see in my email this morning.
I'm happy to report that yesterday wasn't all tears, thankfully. My son Josh, his girlfriend Paisley, and my granddaughter Emma came by for a visit. They treated me to supper and it was nice to get out of the house for awhile. Emma helped Grandma eat her yummy mashed potatoes and couldn't get enough. lol I thought they were pretty good, too, but I should've had my own bib! haha
After that, they came back to my place and Emma and I played chase around my kitchen wall and down the hall. She didn't know what to think at first when she kept going around and around and couldn't find me. I actually kept up behind her for about 2 rounds. Whew! That only happened about 2 times. lol My body isn't made for speed. Listening to her squeal with delight had me cracking up. Doesn't playing with little ones just make your heart feel better, no matter what's going on? It does mine.
Feeling sore all over today from all that playing on the floor yesterday, so I think I'll go spend some time stretching and find a hot shower. Then we'll think about what I need to get done today. :) Have a good one!

Father's Day

This holiday has been sneaking up on me, but I've felt it coming. It's been tugging at my heart because this is the first year that I can't see or hear my Dad on Father's Day. ALS took him away last March. Some days, it really gets to me, and others, I can smile and hear him say my name and just remember the good stuff.

I may not be able to send him a digital or snail mail card anymore, but I can scrap a page with a note of love for him. I miss you, Daddy.

For about a week or so, I've been all over the internet looking for inspiration and admiring the work of others. Time flies when you do that! lol

Anyway, I wanted to come up with something as a gift for my son to give his teacher today but I wasn't sure what she might like. I'm sure all teachers keep lots of notes as they go, so I decided upon making my own pattern for a quilted steno pad cover. I used my machine to make my quilted fabric from some pretty rust and cream scraps I had.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out! I've even started on 4 more. My pics aren't the best, but that's what happens late at night when you don't have some good ol' sunshine! lol Seth's paw is holding it in the darker picture. Thanks, buddy! lol

Terry's Welder's Cap

Hey all,
I've been feeling pretty restless lately and itching to get some sewing done. I finally got another project worked on that I've been putting off for way too long. I think I was just dreading using my cousin Terry's old hat to make a pattern for a new one. I've never made hats before and I must admit, I was stumped as to the technique. ( And I really hate tearing stuff apart to make patterns from!! lol )
Last week I was looking online at sewing blogs and had turned off the computer and hopped into bed. I couldn't get these hats off my mind and the little light bulb went off in my head. With all the great free patterns online, maybe I could find one for this project. Yep, you guessed it. I got back out of bed and turned the pc back on. haha Without too many clicks, I spotted this pattern with printable pieces and instructions. I made him hold still for a couple of pics tonight and he said it was dead on for size and his needs. Yay! I'm so glad! I was sweating it, let me tell you! haha Another cool thing about the hat is that he had sent old cotton shirts to make the hats with so we are recycling, too.
He's happy, I'm happy, and now I need to make him a few more. I think it's a great trade for all of the things he's helped me with around here. Thanks, Terry!

Goofy blogger. It never puts them in the correct order, no matter how I load them. lol Anyway, today I'm sharing a hybrid album that I made using a fun and colorful Cinco de Mayo kit from Nini's Notions. These previews are to make it easier to share what pics I dropped into the ready made album. I have printed them here at home with the names added, of course. Now I just need to stop by the dollar store for some physical supplies to finish it up. :) Selena liked how it turned out, so I'm happy about that.

What this woman wants in a man

I wrote this about 2 years ago and it's on my myspace blog, but I think it still stands, so I thought I would put it here, too. After all, this is my blog to post whatever I want, right? lol

Category: Romance and Relationships
I know there is no such thing as a perfect man (or woman). But sometimes I sit and think "What do I want in a man?" What qualities do I find attractive, important, and necessary for me to get along with them better? Now, of course, this is just my list, but I'm guessing that a lot of women would be happy with several of my choices. Maybe some guys, too? lol
This list isn't in any particular order of importance. All of them are important to me or I wouldn't have felt compelled to finally make and post this list. :)

Respect
We all deserve this. The person you are with will feel so much better about themselves when you show them respect. In turn, they are happier, which should end up making you happier. It's a nice circle to be in, don't you think? ;)

Honesty-
No one is honest 100% of the time. But heck, is it too much to ask for about 90-95% of the time? I don't like liars or players, period!

Reasonably attractive- (aka clean)
Beauty IS in the eyes of the beholder. I have this one rule that I try to stick to. If you can't see yourself kissing them, what's the point in going out with them? (By the way, internet dating really wreaks havoc with this rule. Pictures can lie, A LOT! haha)

Good Sense of Humor
I absolutely love a good joke and laugh! I can dish it out and as long as you're not being mean, I can take it.

Loyalty
You can't ride the fence here. Either you are loyal or you're not, and it will show. To me, being loyal means standing by me, even if your very best buddy (or family) doesn't like it. This doesn't mean you have to agree with me, but you do have to put me first. If I'm your priority, this isn't hard. Remember the part in wedding vows about "forsaking all others"?

Be Courteous
Having a few manners is still nice. lol I love it when a guy is polite and opens the door for me, walks beside me and not in front of me, or lets me order first. :) I've really noticed that so few guys do these little things anymore, but let me tell you this- I think it's nice when you do. It tells me that you care about me. Really! I won't ask you to bait my hook, though. I can do that myself. lol ;)

Have some hobbies
Yeah, I want you to go to the garage or hunting and fishing or whatever sometimes. We all need hobbies. It's good to do things with your hands or minds and can be relaxing. And it is good to spend some free time apart. Just not all the time. I want to spend time with you, too. lol This will also give me time to pursue my hobbies.

Be affectionate
And loving! Hold my hand, kiss me, flirt with me or just smile at me for no reason. I need and crave those little signals that say you are attracted to me. I know first hand that if you take the time to do these little things throughout the day, I'll be happier at the end of the day. I won't finish my thoughts here. Use your imagination. haha

Be yourself
Please don't put on a fake face to impress me or any other woman. I am certainly not perfect and I know you aren't, either. I want to know the real you. We all have our bad days and no one can be their best self everyday.

Good morning! I have 2 more layouts to post this morning. I sure had fun putting them together last night. Getting in the zone is so relaxing. :) This is my nephew and his lovely wife. What a pretty picture of them!

On this page, they were playing at the lake with their daughter last year. I think it would've been fun to watch Olivia's reactions to the waves! lol
